How to Change a YouTube Shorts Thumbnail (2026) — Desktop Studio vs. Mobile App Steps, Changing It After Upload, Why It Won't Change, and Size

You post a Short, open your channel page, and the thumbnail is a frame where your eyes are closed or the camera is mid-shake. So you search "change YouTube Shorts thumbnail," only to find there's no image upload option in the phone app — or you upload one on desktop and still see the old thumbnail, and conclude it simply doesn't work. This post uses the YouTube Help Center as the source of truth to cover the steps for changing a Shorts thumbnail in desktop Studio, what the phone app can and can't do, how to change the thumbnail on a Short you've already posted, what to check when it won't change, and thumbnail size.

Before you read: YouTube behavior here is based on the Help Center pages Add video thumbnails on YouTube (Computer, Android, and iPhone tabs), Verify your YouTube account, and Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts (checked 2026-10). When Shorts custom thumbnails launched and who got them first comes from public reporting (PPC Land and others), so it can differ by account. Menu names change slightly between versions. This post is written by the UUP team, which builds auto-upload, including YouTube.

1. Know this first — Shorts thumbnails are "desktop Studio only"

For a long time, the only way to set a Shorts thumbnail was to pick a frame from the video. According to public reporting, YouTube opened custom thumbnails (uploading your own image file) for Shorts in late July 2026 (reports differ between July 24 and 25), rolling out gradually starting with YouTube Partner Program (YPP) creators. The Help Center now says:

"Custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer. Your account must be verified to use this feature."

So there are two ways to change a Shorts thumbnail, and they do different things.

MethodWhat you can chooseSource
Desktop Studio (studio.youtube.com)Upload your own image (custom thumbnail) — at upload time or afterwardHelp Center
YouTube phone appPick a frame from the video only (no image upload)Public sources — the Help Center's mobile tabs only say Shorts custom thumbnails are "computer only"

The phone-app steps in the Help Center (Android and iPhone tabs) — Edit → Edit thumbnail → Custom thumbnail — are for regular videos. For Shorts, the same tabs only say you can add a custom thumbnail when uploading a Short on a computer or after uploading it. That's why people get stuck hunting for an image option on their phone.

2. Changing a Shorts thumbnail in desktop Studio — at upload or after

Changing the thumbnail on a Short you've already posted (per the Help Center)

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio in a computer browser.
  2. In the left menu, choose Content → the Shorts tab at the top.
  3. Click Details (the pencil icon) on the Short you want to change.
  4. Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and pick your image. The recommended aspect ratio is 9:16.
  5. Click Save.

To set it at upload time, upload the vertical video via Studio's Create → Upload videos, and upload the file the same way in the thumbnail field on the details screen. According to public reporting, on desktop you can also pick from three suggested thumbnails without making your own artwork. The Help Center also describes generating thumbnail drafts with Studio's AI assistant (Ask Studio).

Don't panic if it doesn't look changed right after you save. The Help Center notes that "it may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube."

3. Changing a Shorts thumbnail on a phone (iPhone/Android) — frame picking only

Here is the path public sources describe for changing a Shorts thumbnail on a phone (per public sources; menu names and locations can differ or be missing depending on the app version).

  1. YouTube app → profile picture → Your videos (or Your channel → Shorts)
  2. ⋮ (More) next to the Short → Edit
  3. In the thumbnail section, pick a frame from the video and save

Here you can only choose frames that are actually in the video. If you want an image with a title on it, you have two options.

  • Go to desktop Studio: opening Studio in a phone browser often bounces you to the mobile view, so a computer is the reliable route.
  • Put a thumbnail shot at the start or end of the video: this is what accounts without custom thumbnails used to do. Add a short cover shot while editing, then pick that frame in the app.

Per the Help Center, there's no difference between iPhone and Android. On both, Shorts custom thumbnails are "computer only."

4. When a Shorts thumbnail won't change — a cause checklist

SymptomLikely causeCheck / fix
There's no Upload file option at all① You're in the phone app ② Your account isn't verified ③ The feature hasn't reached your channel yet① Go to desktop Studio ② Complete phone verification (below) ③ Per public reporting it rolls out starting with YPP — can differ by account

You don't see the thumbnail while swiping the Shorts feedThe feed plays the video directlyAccording to public sources, Shorts thumbnails show not in the Shorts feed but in places like search, your channel's Shorts tab, subscriptions, and home shelves. Check the result there

Account verification works like this. Per the Help Center, verifying with a code sent by text or voice call to your phone number unlocks adding custom thumbnails, uploading videos longer than 15 minutes, live streaming, and more. It notes that some advanced features also require channel history or ID/video verification after phone verification.

There's one more trap. The Help Center says "vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails will be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore, and subscription pages." If you put a horizontal thumbnail on a vertical video, your image won't show on home — so make it vertical 9:16.

5. Shorts thumbnail size — make it 9:16 and keep text in the middle

Here are the custom thumbnail recommendations from the Help Center.

ItemShortsRegular video (for comparison)
Recommended ratio9:1616:9
Recommended resolution2160×3840px3840×2160px
Minimum sizeHeight of 640px or moreWidth of 640px or more
File formatJPG, PNG, etc.Same
File size50MB on desktop (Shorts are desktop-only, so this limit applies)2MB mobile · 50MB desktop

The common 1080×1920 is also 9:16 and clears the 640px minimum height, so it's fine. If you want to match the recommended resolution, use 2160×3840.

Text placement needs separate attention. According to public reporting, YouTube's own guidance noted that "Shorts are vertical 9:16, but on most screens the preview area looks flatter," so text placed at the very top or bottom can get cropped. In practice, keep the title text and faces in the vertical middle, and leave only background that's fine to crop at the top and bottom edges. How to build an Instagram Reels cover on the same principle is covered in How to change a Reels cover.

6. Thumbnails on scheduled or auto-uploaded Shorts — set them in Studio after publishing

If you make Shorts ahead of time and schedule them, here's how thumbnails work.

  • If you use Studio's scheduled publishing, just set the thumbnail on desktop in the same upload flow where you schedule. The scheduling steps themselves are in How to schedule YouTube Shorts.
  • If you use an external auto-upload tool, it's different. Thumbnails sent through the YouTube API those tools use (thumbnails.set) don't apply to Shorts — it's a Google-side limit, and the related Google Issue Tracker report (381127084) and API access request (391129953) remain unresolved as of 2026-10. So whatever tool you use, set the Shorts thumbnail in Studio after publishing, following the steps in section 2.

UUP's auto-upload handles this limit like this.

  • When it uploads a video to YouTube, it sends the cover (thumbnail) image along with it (JPG/PNG, 2MB or less). On regular horizontal videos, it applies as-is.
  • The moment you pick a video on the compose screen, it runs a Shorts check from the resolution and length (vertical or square + 3 minutes or less). If YouTube is the only channel in the post where covers apply, it closes the cover field and tells you to "set it yourself in Studio after publishing."
  • If a channel where covers do apply, like Instagram Reels, is also in the post, the field stays but warns that "this won't apply to YouTube Shorts."
  • The server keeps sending the cover for Shorts too, so it applies right away if Google opens up the API.

How covers differ per channel when you post the same video to Reels and TikTok too is in the per-channel table in How to cross-upload Reels, Shorts, and TikTok. Auto-upload is available on Upload Pro ($8.49/month) and Ultra ($14.99/month, includes Auto DM). For pinning a description link as the first comment right after publishing, see How to pin a comment on YouTube.

FAQ

Can I change the thumbnail on a Short I've already posted?

Yes. The Help Center says you can add a custom thumbnail not only when uploading a Short on a computer but also after uploading. The steps are desktop Studio → Content → Shorts → Details → Thumbnail → Upload file → Save. Note that the Upload file option requires a verified account, and feature availability can differ by account.

Can I use my own photo as a Shorts thumbnail from my phone (iPhone)?

Not per the Help Center as of 2026-10. Shorts custom thumbnails can only be added "in YouTube Studio on a computer," and per public sources the phone app only lets you pick a frame from the video.

What size should a Shorts thumbnail be?

The ratio is 9:16, the Help Center's recommended resolution is 2160×3840px, and the minimum height is 640px. 1080×1920 works too. The format is JPG/PNG, and the desktop upload limit is 50MB. Keep text in the middle, away from the top and bottom edges.
