How to Auto-Reply to Instagram Comments (2026) — Rotating Reply Copy, Not Looking Like a Bot, and Pairing Replies with DMs
When a Reel takes off, the comments pile up by the hundreds. Answer each one with "Sent you a DM!" and your day is gone; don't answer, and commenters feel ignored. That's why people search for Instagram comment auto-replies. This article covers how to automatically post public replies to comments, how to keep the same sentence from repeating hundreds of times and looking like a bot, and how to design public replies and DMs as one package.
The Instagram app has no built-in comment auto-reply
One misconception first. The auto-replies inside the Instagram app (Frequently Asked Questions, saved replies, AI auto-replies) all work in the DM chat window. There is no built-in feature that posts public replies to comments on your posts automatically — those three built-in features are covered in How to Set Up Instagram Auto-Replies.
Comment auto-replies are posted by outside tools through Meta's official API (the comment management permission of the Instagram API with Instagram Login). There is a fork in the road here.
| Approach | How it works | Account risk |
|---|---|---|
| Official API tool | Posts replies under your account name through a Meta-approved path | Low — a connection that passed app review |
| Unofficial macro | Logs in with your password and clicks and types as if it were you | High — repetitive patterns get detected as automation |
Comment replies are public, so a macro that posts the same sentence hundreds of times at short intervals leaves a very visible trail. When choosing a tool, first check whether its connect screen sends you to the official Instagram login window (the full distinction is in Instagram DM Automation Without Getting Banned).
Why reply publicly — it does a different job than the DM
If your account already runs comment-to-DM automation, you may ask: "The DM goes out — do I need a reply too?" The two are seen by different people.
- The DM is seen only by the person who commented. What you actually deliver — links, coupons, product details — goes here.
- The public reply is seen by everyone who views the post. It's proof that "comment and you really get an answer," which nudges the next person to comment.
Public replies have one more job. The first automated DM can land in message requests if the person doesn't follow you. A public reply that says "Check your DMs" raises the odds that a DM buried in requests gets opened (see Instagram Message Requests, Explained for how requests work).
Not looking like a bot — five rules for reply copy

When the same sentence lines up down the comment section, people instantly think "bot." Here's how to keep automated replies feeling natural.
- Register at least three lines and rotate them. With only one, the comment section becomes a copy-paste list. Per public materials, Manychat's guide also recommends at least three for randomized replies. With five or six, the same sentence almost never appears twice in a row.
- Mix length and tone. Combine short and long: "Sent you a DM!", "Check your inbox 🙌", "Just sent it — peek at your requests folder too."
- Don't put links in replies. Links in Instagram comments aren't tappable. Links belong in the DM; the reply ends at "check your DMs."
- Don't promise what you can't guarantee. Pin a time like "sent within a minute" and it becomes a lie the day delivery runs late.
- Add one word of post context. "Group-buy link sent to your DMs" on a group-buy post, "Recipe's in your DMs" on a recipe post — keeping a separate set of lines per post feels far more human.
Setting it up in UUP — the public reply is step 5 of DM automation
In UUP, the public reply isn't a separate feature — it's step 5 of the 6 steps for building a DM automation. For each comment, the DM and the public reply go out as one package.
| Step | What you set | Relation to the public reply |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Start | Start now / scheduled start (turns on automatically 5 minutes before the scheduled time) | Replies start in step with your post time |
| 2 Posts | A specific post (recommended) / next post / all posts | The scope where replies are posted |
| 3 Keywords | All comments / specific keywords (add several at once, comma-separated) | Replies only on matching comments |
| 4 Sending policy | The first DM is one text message; once the person replies, follow-ups within 24 hours | — |
| 5 Reply | Leave a public reply / don't, preset lines + several of your own | One of your registered lines is picked at random |
| 6 Message | DM content per keyword | The DM carries the actual content |
In step 5, tap a preset chip like "Please check your DM" or add your own sentences, and each comment gets one of them picked at random. Put in four to six lines following the five rules above. If you save the finished automation as a template, the reply lines are saved too, so on your next post you just load it and swap the post-context word.
Two things to state honestly. First, UUP has no feature that posts public replies alone without a DM — the public reply is part of the comment-to-DM flow. Second, what's available now is comments on Instagram posts. DM automation is part of DM Pro ($8.49/month) and Ultra ($14.99/month), with a 14-day trial and no card required (it's not on the Free or Basic plans — see pricing).
Checklist before switching replies on
- [ ] Do you have three or more lines, varied in length and tone?
- [ ] Are the replies free of links, prices, deadlines, or anything else that might change?
- [ ] If keywords are set to "all comments," are you fine with the same reply landing on trolls and questions too? (If not, use specific keywords.)
- [ ] Did you test with a comment from another account and confirm both the reply and the DM arrive?
- [ ] Does the first DM match the reply's promise ("Sent you a DM")? — copy structure is in How to Write Instagram Auto DM Copy

FAQ
Does auto-replying to comments reduce a post's reach?
Replies posted through the official API remain as ordinary comments, the same as replies your account posts by hand. Repeating one sentence, though, can feel like spam to viewers, so rotating several lines is the safe choice. There are no official figures showing replies raise or lower reach.
Do comments without the keyword get a reply?
Choose "all comments" in step 3 and every comment gets a reply and DM; choose "specific keywords" and only comments containing a keyword do. To keep chit-chat comments from getting answers, specific keywords work better.
How many reply lines is right?
At least three; four to six is recommended. Too many gets hard to manage, too few and the same sentence lands back to back.
