Instagram Story Link Sticker: How to Add One (2026) — Requirements, Fixes, and What URL to Use
There's exactly one way to put a link in a Story now — the link sticker. Swipe-up is gone, and the 10K-follower requirement was scrapped years ago. Yet searches are still full of "the sticker isn't showing" and "how many followers do I need." This guide covers the 4-step how-to, the actual requirements, the fix order when the sticker won't appear, and a question that matters more than people think — what URL to put in it.
Verified as of 2026-08. Instagram moves menus and changes conditions without notice — cross-check Instagram's help center for the current state.

Adding one — 4 steps
- Create a story (shoot or pick from gallery).
- Tap the sticker icon (the square smiley) at the top.
- Choose the Link sticker and paste your URL.
- Optionally use customize sticker text to change the label — "see today's drop" beats a raw address.
Tap the placed sticker to cycle colors; drag to move and resize. Stickers too close to screen edges can overlap the profile icon or reply bar and become untappable — tap it once in preview before publishing.
Requirements — follower count doesn't matter
| Item | Status (verified 2026-08) |
|---|---|
| Follower count | No requirement — the 10K threshold was removed in October 2021 |
| Account type | Personal, Creator, and Business all work |
| Private accounts | Works — but the story itself is visible to followers only |
| Quantity | 1 link sticker per story frame |
Plenty of articles still say "10K followers required." That's outdated. A brand-new account in good standing can use it.
When the sticker won't show — check in this order
- Update the app — sticker availability tracks app versions. Update, then fully restart.
- Re-login — logging out and back in sometimes surfaces it.
- Is the account only days old? New accounts can get the sticker a few days late as an anti-spam measure.
- Guideline restrictions — accounts with violation history can have link features temporarily limited. Check Settings → Account Status.
- Is the URL itself blocked? Spam-associated URLs and some shortened links can be rejected on paste. Test a different address to tell an account problem from a URL problem.
What URL to use — the story disappears, the record shouldn't
Technically, any URL works. But stories have a property nothing else has — the whole post vanishes in 24 hours. Put an individual product address in, and once the story's gone, so is your way of knowing how many clicks it produced.
Two recommendations:
① Default to your link page address. Instead of editing the sticker URL every time the product changes, point it at a link page that collects your products — viewers see today's item plus everything else. With a UUP link page, visits and clicks land in your own analytics, so the traffic record survives the story.
② Tag the address for stories. Same link page URL, different tag (UTM) per placement, and your analytics separates profile traffic from story traffic.
That one line means next week's analytics still shows "last week's story drove this many visits." Tagging rules are covered in How to Build UTM Links.
Running group buys? One more combination: announce the open in a story with the link page in the sticker, and put comment-triggered Auto DM on the feed post — story viewers take the sticker, commenters take the DM, each on their shortest path.
FAQ
I'm on a personal account — can I use the link sticker?
Yes. No account-type or follower requirements. But link-click counts in Insights are professional-account-only — if you need numbers, either switch to a professional account or put an analytics-backed link page address in the sticker.
I want multiple links in one story
It's one sticker per frame. You can split across frames with one link each, but with several products, one link page in the sticker gives viewers a shorter path than frame-hopping.
Where do I see story link clicks?
While the story is live: story insights (professional accounts). After it's gone: the UTM method above — click records stay in your page analytics, checkable anytime.
